NBA Trends: 3-Point Shooting

The NBA has seen a significant increase in 3-point shooting recently, specifically since 2011-12.

Team 3-point attempts have increased from 18.4 per game to 29.0 per game, a 57.6% increase in just 6 seasons. For the past three seasons, teams have attempted more 3’s than free throws – the first three times in NBA history.

Note: attempts spiked in the early 1990’s due to a shortened 3-point line.

Even more impressively, this hasn’t led to a fall in the NBA’s 3-point percentage. In fact, for each of the past 6 seasons the NBA 3-point percentage has been higher than the 2011-12 percentage (.349%).

Looking at player data, you can see some interesting changes in player’s 3-point shooting frequency. The below table is limited to players with at least 500 minutes in 2017 and 2018.

Notable Decreases

Russell Westbrook: -0.09619 3PA/MP (largest decrease)

In 2017 Westbrook took a 3-pointer every 5 minutes while shooting slightly below league average (.343%). In 2018, he dropped his rate down to 1 every 9 minutes, but fell to significantly below average (.298%). It is surprising to see such a large decrease in percentage despite taking fewer shots. You would expect fewer shots means fewer forced 3’s. However, the arrival of Paul George certainly influenced his play.

Domantas Sabonis: -0.07698 3PA/MP (3rd largest decrease)

Sabonis went from shooting nearly 1 3-pointer per 10 minutes to 1 per 50 minutes – nearly an 80% decrease in his 3PA rate. A different role in the offense can partially be explained by his switch from the Thunder to the Pacers. It is interesting to note his shooting actually improved YoY, going from .321% to .351%. It would appear he is capable of starting to shoot more 3’s again.

J.R. Smith: -0.05852 3PA/MP (6th largest decrease)

Smith wasn’t the same type of gunner last season as he had been previously. His percentages actually went up from .351% to .375%, showing he probably had room to keep firing up more shots.

Andre Roberson: -0.04273 3PA/MP (10th largest decrease)

Roberson has been a horrible 3 point shooter in his career (.257%). While his percentage actually got worse (.245% to .222%), the improved shot selection led to career highs in FG% and eFG%.

Notable Increases

Marreese Speights: +0.12979 3PA/MP (largest increase)

In just 2 years, Speights went from rarely shooting 3’s, to shooting the most 3’s per 100 possessions in the league (minimum 500 minutes). This is remarkable for a center that took just 79 3’s over 7847 minutes across his first 7 seasons. In 2018 he took one every 3 minutes, shooting 233 in only 675 minutes.

Dewayne Dedmon: +0.09144 3PA/MP (7th largest increase)

Dedmon didn’t take a single 3 in 2017 over 1330 minutes. In 2018, he went 50-141 from 3, a remarkable increase, while shooting nearly a league average percentage (.355%). Dedmon had only attempted 1 three in his entire career prior to 2018, and didn’t even make 1 in college. This is an example of a player with the ability to shoot from deep finally getting the opportunity.

Pascal Siakam: +0.07047 3PA/MP (11th largest increase)

Siakam is at the opposite end of the spectrum from Dedmon. After barely shooting from 3 in 2017 (1-7), he increased his rate significantly while shooting a terrible percentage in 2018 (29-132 – .220%). It wouldn’t be surprising to see Siakam’s attempts pull back next season, unless the coaching staff truly believes in his ability, or he makes a significant change.

NBA Trends: 3-Point Shooting

The NBA has seen a significant increase in 3-point shooting recently, specifically since 2011-12.
